SXSW 2010 Showcasing Artist Finally, there's an answer for Hip Hop fans yearning for an emcee that can bring them back to the genre's golden era in New York City while still taking the game forward to unseen heights: His name is Skyzoo. Get familiar. Last year, Sky was chosen by the people as one of the "Top 10 Emcees Alive" in a poll created by NYC'S HOT 97 radio station and Peter Rosenberg. Amongst heavy-hitters like Nas, Andre 3000, and Lil' Wayne, Skyzoo ranked in at number seven -- the ONLY unsigned artist to make the cut. After fifteen years with a mic in his hand, six independent mixtapes, an indie EP, over 100 songs, and more than 2.3 million audio plays on his MySpace page, 25-year-old Skyzoo has matured into one of the game's most elite packages yet. The loyal Brooklynite (splitting his time between Crown Heights and Bedford Stuyvesant) has already received accolades from a range of respected Hip Hop figures (including Dj Drama, Talib Kweli, Buckshot, Sean Price and EPMD). With his street-heavy, sharp narrating style, and wit, Skyzoo understands the mentality of true Hip Hop fans and consequently crafts music for both their ears and eyes. "If they lend me their ears, they're also lending me their eyes," explains Skyzoo, who prides himself in the art of storytelling with a street swagger. "When you hear my music, I promise you, you're going to hear something that you've never heard before, and you'll see something you've never seen. It's that real." Respected artists and producers in the game have already tapped into Skyzoo's undeniable talent. He has recorded a highly acclaimed EP, Cloud 9: The 3 Day High, with super-producer 9th Wonder , as well as collaborated with Dj Premier, Flo-Rida, Maino, Little Brother, Black Milk, Khrysis, Parrish Smith of EPMD, N.O.R.E, Ace Hood, Sean Price, Needlz, Illmind, Nottz, and Don Cannon, among many others. While launching his mainstream solo career, Skyzoo also serves as the CEO of his own entertainment company (AudioWorx Entertainment) which he uses to create and develop ideas for future endeavors such as film, television shows, and merchandise-- all centered around his musical roots. Sky has already graced the pages of SCRATCH ("this NY upstart provides countless flows and insight"—Aug 2006), XXL ("possessed with a captivating flow that falls somewhere between Jiggaman's and old Juice Crew standout Craig-G's, he wastes no time when showing off his skills. His narratives would surely make Big Poppa ( B.I.G.) proud"—Aug 2006), Vibe, The Source, and Spin. He's also had reviews and feature interviews on nearly every Hip Hop website imaginable. His last project, Corner Store Classic, has been labeled on the streets as just that: classic! Hosted by Dj Kay Slay and Mick Boogie, the mixtape has been surrounded with tons of critical acclaim including being crowned on BET's Rap City with the "Mixtape Pick of the Week" title. "Whenever people get my mixtapes, they always tell me I'm giving away so much incredible music that's worth paying for," says Skyzoo. "In response, I tell them 'This is just the stuff I'm giving out for free, so imagine what I make for my major debut. Imagine what I make you pay $15 for'". That debut Sky speaks of is The Salvation, his first official full length album slated for release in September 29, 2009 "When I think about my debut, I get so excited it overwhelms me. I can't wait to really go full fledged with the recording of it. I grew up on Ready to Die, Only Built for Cuban Linx, Reasonable Doubt, Illmatic, No Way Out, things of that nature. So I know what I wanna do with my record. It's gonna be nothing short of spectacular". Most recently, Skyzoo was voted the recipient of the "Best Lyricist" award for the 2008 Underground Music Awards. With Skyzoo as the torch bearer, Hip Hop's future is looking fluorescently bright.
